Committed to delivering one cohesive program for Years 7 to 9, each university is responsible for delivering four-to-five-weeks of literacy-focused learning initiatives for one year group.
Why literacy?
The NSW Equity Consortium was founded on the understanding that literacy is key to academic success. Literacy covers many bases: from the basics of spelling, phonics and grammar to the more complex literary skills of reading between the lines and asking critical questions.
Our level of literacy underpins our capacity for learning, the way we learn, and our ability to make the best decisions about our futures. For this reason, students' literacy is intrinsically connected with their academic and personal learning journeys.
UNSW's role in the NSW Equity Consortium
UNSW is responsible for delivering the Year 9 program component.
For students, this program:
- uses innovative ways to shift negative self-perceptions about students' own learning
- develops an understanding of education's value and purpose
- develops an understanding of the importance academic success plays in opening future possibilities, and
- explores possibilities for future study and post-school options.
For teachers and schools, this program:
- supports them to identify and pilot a range of different approaches to teaching and learning
- offers professional learning for teachers delivered by academics from the Schools of Education at UNSW, Macquarie University and the University of Technology Sydney.
